Restaurants and Delivery

We love Chase and Lenoir, but we can understand that some people may want some variety in life. Franklin Street has many restaurants. You can see them for yourself.

Derwin says: “Be sure to eat at the restaurants that make the Chapel Hill experience what it is. Check out Ye Olde Waffle Shop, McAllister’s, Sutton’s Drug Store, Miami Subs, Sakura, Kurama, Time Out, BW3’s, Hector’s, and others. If you stay out late like me, remember that Cosmic Cantina, Miami Subs, Hector’s and Time Out stay open late.”

The Carolina Off-Campus Meal Plan is an off-campus meal plan that allows students to use their meal plan at about 30 restaurants in Chapel Hill, get discounts from Franklin Street merchants, and get your money back at the end of the semester. (LINK)

If you want to go fancy, check out this guide to fine dining .

We do have some words of advice about eating out, and that’s, “Don’t over-do it!”

Ariel says: “My love for dining out was severely dampened when I reached college due to limited funds. I quickly learned how to budget myself while venturing outside of Lenoir and Chase.”

Nightlife

After a week of classes, most people like to celebrate a constructive week with a little fun! Chapel Hill offers a variety of opportunities for constructive fun on the weekends. Here are a few places we recommend.

Avalon (formerly known as Gotham) is a hot-spot for dancing and fun. It’s located on West Rosemary Street.

Club Element (formerly known as NV) is a very sleek, savvy dance club. It looks like a fancy New York club, and some of the best dancers in Chapel Hill frequent the place. It’s located in the Bank of America Plaza on the side facing Rosemary.

Players is a sports-themed club for people of varied interests. Many dancers love the wood dance floor, and people who just like to meet people enjoy the lounge area that overlooks Franklin Street. Get there early to avoid the long lines! It’s located on Franklin Street, next to Sutton’s Drug Store. Walk up the steps and take a right.

Treehouse is another dancing hot-spot, especially on Thursday. It’s located on East Rosemary.

Fraternities, sororities, and other campus organizations have events, also. Check out the websites of the organizations and the campus calendar.

Shopping

Get your shop on! Franklin Street has many shops, including clothing and apparel, furniture, outdoor equipment, bicycles, movies, office supplies, and books. Explore the strip, and don’t forget Carrboro either.

The Town of Carrboro, which is adjacent to Chapel Hill, has many shops and the Carr Mill Mall, a shopping center with a Harris Teeter. A Wal-Mart is located a few miles from campus. University Mall in Chapel Hill is a small place to pick up items, and it’s accessible via Chapel Hill transit's F bus (picks up on Franklin, next to Carolina Coffee Shop). Southpoint Mall offers anchor stores, a large theater, and many specialty stores, and the TTA provides daily transportation to it.

Derwin says: “Everyone should take a trip to Southpoint, if just to look. It’s a beautiful place with a bunch of shops.”

Entertainment

Chapel Hill entertainment is limited only by your imagination. Roll up to the sixth floor of Ehringhaus for a free view of a Tar Heel baseball game. Lay on Polk Place on a sunny day, relaxing with your friends. Hang out in the Pit during rush hours. Be seen at the Undergrad.

If live music is more your scene, look into hot-spots like Cat's Cradle and Local 506.

Check out the alt.music.chapel-hill guide to the Triangle. (LINK )

ChillWebCo has produced an online web guide to the local music scene.

Community Service

If you want to make a difference in the commmunity, go to the website of the Carolina Center for Public Service. They have a listing of the many groups, agencies, and institutions that need people like you to help out.

The UNC System and Local Universities

We hope it doesn’t shock you that UNC-CH is but one of 16 campuses of the University of North Carolina. Check out the UNC system's website for information about our sister schools.

Every UNC Student must check out Duke University and North Carolina State University, perhaps our biggest rivals. Both schools have much to offer in the form of entertainment and academic resources. Dook, oops Duke, in Durham, is connected to us by the Robertson Scholars’ Bus. State is in Raleigh.
