HIDDEN PLACES ON CAMPUS
1. The Visitors'
Center at Morehead Hall. Most students ignore this place after
they get here, but everyone should check it out. There are exhibits
on the University, and a cool scale model of Chapel Hill. The
best place is the rotunda of that side of the Morehead building.
There are beautiful paintings, columns, and a statue of James
Polk, UNC's President.
2. The Daily Grind. Forget commercial coffee, and check out
UNC's own coffee shop inside of Student Stores. Good stuff,
and down with commercialism!
3. Carolina Theater. Next to Ackland Art Museum, it's a perfect
place to catch great movies.
4. Wendy's. Nestled in the UNC Hospitals, students can enjoy
their favorite fast-food restaurant. Go to the front desk of
the hospital.
5. The Union Annex. Not the New Union, but the Annex. If you
look at the old Union and go behind (on the side of Davis),
you'll see a beautiful mural. That's the Union Annex where the
Film Auditorium, DTH office, Student Legal Services, and other
offices are.
6. Memorial Hall. It's hidden because it's closed now due to
renovations. It's a concert hall, and it will be used a lot
when renovations are done.
7. Graham Memorial. A lot of students don't take advantage of
the awesome Morehead Lounge and the terrace at Graham memorial.
There's a small coffee shop inside. It's perfect for studying.
8. The Blue Ram. Hungry? Why don't you check out the convenience
store in the Campus Y that is not like many other campus locales.
It's catered by Cosmic Cantina for lunch.
9. Alumni Gardens. Next to Hanes Art Center there is a garden
where people like to study when it's nice outside.
10. McCorkle Place. When it's nice outside, people love to sit
out on Polk Place. Don't forget about McCorkle Place, the original
"quad" of UNC-CH. Silent Sam, Caldwell Memorial, and
Davie Poplar are there. Students are so busy passing through
it on their way to Franklin that they forget how cool it could
be to spend some time on the lawn.
11. The Upendo Lounge. Soon to be torn down as a part of the
Master Plan, Chase Hall is home to the Upendo Lounge. Everyone
knows Chase Dining Hall, but few people notice that there are
two stories to the building. On the second floor is the lounge
that was called the Black Student Union because the first classes
of African American students were required to live in Hinton
James and Upendo was a meeting place, lounge, recreation center,
and dance hall for them. The Black Student Movement meets and
has events there today.
12. Wilson Library. We all see it, but few of us actually go
inside. Check out the photo exhibits on the ground floor.
13. The Renovated Union. This place reopened January of last
year, and it is a great place to hang out, study, or grab a
cup of coffee. The Union houses the mighty Great Hall, a place
for many events, and the Alpine Bagel shop. It's the only eatery
on North Campus open late.
14. The Ram. On the back of Kenan Stadium, facing the Football
Center, there is the largest statue of a ram in the United States.
The Carolina Review, one of our fine publications, reported
this, so we'll take their word on it.
15. ATN Labs. NEVER, EVER use your personal printer to print
anything non-color. Your student fees have paid for ATN computer
labs and printing. There is one near you!
